Ingredients
  • 1 loaf Japanese milk bread (Shokupan)
  • 5-6 whole eggs
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 tsp dark vanilla extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
Method
  1. 1Slice a whole loaf of bread into exceptionally thick pieces (about 2-3 inches each).
  2. 2Prepare the French toast batter by cracking several eggs into a metal bowl, adding a few spoonfuls of sugar, a dash of vanilla extract, and a large pour of heavy cream.
  3. 3Whisk the batter thoroughly until all ingredients are combined.
  4. 4Completely submerge a thick slice of bread in the rich batter, allowing it to soak deeply and saturate on all sides.
  5. 5Heat a non-stick pan on a stovetop and melt a generous block of butter, swirling it around the pan.
  6. 6Place the soaked bread slice in the sizzling butter and cook until a deep golden-brown crust forms on one side.
  7. 7Flip the bread slice to cook the other side, adding more butter to the pan during this process to ensure even browning.
  8. 8After pan-frying, transfer the French toast (still in the pan) into an oven to finish cooking through the thick interior and keep warm.
  9. 9While the French toast is in the oven, prepare whipped cream by pouring heavy cream into a glass bowl and whisking in granulated sugar until it thickens.
